Wine is an essential part of any dining experience, so each of our hotels has an expert sommelier and boasts a truly remarkable cellar.
Naturally you’ll find a superb selection of the established vintages from the Old World - classic clarets and Burgundies, majestic wines of Italy and Spain. Alongside these you can experience some of the most sought after New World wines from the Americas, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, together with a fascinating variety of delights from less celebrated regions – wines from Mexico, Greece, Georgia, Slovakia, Moldova, to name but a few Whatever your personal taste and choice of dishes your sommelier will be happy to make suggestions and to advise.
Our most famous Sommelier is Eric Zweibel, based at Summer Lodge. In 2004 he was named Ruinart’s UK Sommelier of the Year (as past winners are ineligible for further competition, he now acts as a judge) and in 2007 was listed among the world’s four most accomplished practitioners in the Best Sommelier of The World Competition, in which he was also the sole finalist from his native France. Eric now trains and assists all the sommeliers in the Red Carnation Collection, sharing his ideas, knowledge and inspiration. Eric hosts regular wine dinners at Summer Lodge.
In line with its enthusiasm for fine wine Red Carnation supports and works in close affiliation with the celebrated Bouchard Finalyson winery, makers of some of South Africa’s most distinguished wines, and each of our hotels are proud to present a range of these outstanding vintages.
