Sir Ernest Shackleton, from County Kildare in Ireland, was an early explorer with one area of discovery on his compass: the Antarctic. In 1902, on the ship The Discovery, Shackleton and his crew became the first voyagers to travel further South than ever recorded. Shackleton continued to brave the rough, icy waters of the South Pole until he died on his final voyage in 1922.
