Olympic Torch Relay in London

Event: Olympic Torch Relay
Date: April 6th 2008

Guests staying at luxury London hotel the Egerton will not have to run a marathon this April in order to be a part of the 2008 Olympics.

On April 6th 2008, those staying at luxury London hotel the Egerton can join the throngs of Londoners as they line the streets of the capital forming a guard of honour for the Olympic Flame as it travels through the city on its way to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The final route announcement will be made in the near future, however the London leg of the relay will pass through several boroughs and wil take in both historic and modern landmarks.

In total, 80 torchbearers will carry the Olympic flame through London before a "major community event" culminating in the lighting of a cauldron by the final torchbearer takes place.

Ken Livingstone, mayor of London, commented: "Following the outstanding success of the Athens Olympic Torch Relay in London in 2004, it is a great honour for our city to participate in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay."

Organisers insist that there will be multiple opportunities for visitors to view the procession along the route.

The mayor also noted that the torch relay was also a "unique" opportunity to garner interest in London for the games, as the capital prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games for itself.
