Event: Derek Jarman: Curated by Isaac Julien
Date: February 23rd until April 13th 2008
Filmgoers and those with an enthusiasm for the medium should pay a visit to the Derek Jarman: Curated by Isaac Julien exhibition taking place at Serpentine Gallery over the coming months.
Visitors to luxury London hotel 41 be able to learn more about a selection of work from the British film-maker Derek Jarman, led by artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien.
Highlights will include Jarman's film work as well as examples of his paintings.
Described by Serpentine Gallery as, arguably, "the single most crucial figure of British independent cinema in the 1970s, 80s and 90s" the exhibition discusses his struggle for gay rights, the impact of AIDS, the period of punk and the Thatcher era.
Rarely seen films taken from the Derek Jarman Super-8 archive and an installation of his film Blue, 1993 will be part of this display.
Julien has recently created a film about Jarman featuring an interview with the subject himself, footage of which features narration by Tilda Swinton and clips of Jarman's own work.
