Montreux Jazz Festival

Event: Montreux Jazz Festival
Date: July 4th until 19th 2008

The 42nd Montreux Jazz Festival is set to take place close to luxury Geneva hotel Hotel d'Angleterre this summer and may be of interest to jazz enthusiasts staying at the residence.

Recognised as the best known music festival in Switzerland, the concert takes place on the shores of Lac Leman.

Founded in 1967, the event initially lasted for a period of three days and featured such artists as Nina Simone, Bill Evans and Ella Fitzgerald.

Nowadays, the Montreux Jazz Festival attracts in excess of 200,000 visitors each year.

After the first base for the festival, Montreux Casino, burned down in the early 1970s, the occasion was commemorated in the Deep Purple song Smoke on the Water.

Deep Purple had been recording in the area when the fire occurred and the title of the song refers to the fire as seen from the band's hotel room across Lake Geneva.

Since its inception more contemporary artists such as Sting, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Youssou N'Dour, Marianne Faithfull, Simply Red, Eric Clapton, Alanis Morissette, David Bowie and Paul Simon have featured at the festival.
