Alison Watt: Phantom

Event: Alison Watt: Phantom at the National Gallery
Date: Until June 22nd 2008

Alison Watt is the seventh and youngest Associate Artist to display at the National Gallery in London.

The Rootstein Hopkins Foundation Associate Artist is appointed for a duration of two years in the National Gallery studio with the purpose of creating new work that reflects the Gallery's permanent collection.

Guests staying at luxury London hotel the Egerton have the chance to peruse her Phantom exhibition until June 22nd 2008.

Watt's recent work depicts her fascination with the possibilities offered through the suggestive power of fabric.

A source of inspiration for the artist, which is reflected in this most recent exhibit, was a trip to London to the National Gallery during her childhood, the gallery reports.

According to the National Gallery, it was this visit that resulted in her lifelong admiration for the 1856 portrait Madame Moitessier by Ingres.

"Material is portrayed in a monumental way through six large scale works by Alison Watt who depicts great swathes of draped, twisted and knotted white cloth giving it a rich, sensual texture," LondonTown enthuses.

The painter studied at the Glasgow School of Art and was offered a solo exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2000, making her the youngest artist to be offered such an opportunity in the gallery's history.
