Vilhelm Hammershoi retrospective

Event: Vilhelm Hammershoi exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts
Date: June 28th to September 7th 2008

Fine art fans will have an excellent excuse for booking into luxury London hotel the Chesterfield Mayfair this summer, as the Royal Academy of Arts celebrates a UK first.

From June 28th until September 7th the gallery will be hosting Britain's first ever retrospective exhibition of the unique masterworks of late 19th century artist Vilhelm Hammershoi.

Over 60 paintings, sourced from galleries as far apart as the United States, Japan and Europe, will adorn the venues walls, spanning the full breadth of the Danish artist's prolific career.

Understated grace in everyday settings are a common feature of the artist's landscapes, portraits and city views, with paintings possessing a quiet, haunted quality, often exemplified by the presence of a solitary figure.

The Royal Academy of Arts was established in 1768 by King George III and was the first institution created solely for the promotion of the visual arts.

Today the gallery is governed by eighty Royal Academicians, all of which are practicing painters, sculptors, architects and artists.
