The tale follows the lives of Norma Desmond, a film star beset by the misfortune of changing times, and Joe Gills, an ambitious but struggling script writer eager to make his mark on the film industry.
Norma is desperate to return to her former big screen glory but the times have left her behind.
One day, a plucky young scriptwriter pulls into the mansion of Hollywood's former darling and the two quickly realise they can be of mutual benefit to one another.
As the pair work on the story for Norma's grand comeback picture Salome, the faded star falls desperately in love with him and moves him into her mansion.
Despite being plunged into a life of luxury and celebrity splendour, Joe is unhappy, having lost his friends and old lifestyle.
Things become more complicated when he begins working with another lady, Betty Schaefer, who he falls for.
Faced with a decision, the young hopeful leaves his Hollywood partner but his plan is brought to a tragic end when an inconsolable Norma shoots him as he exits her home.
