Event: Shochiku Grand Kabuki - Twelfth Night After Shakespeare
Date: March 24th until the 28th
What do you get if you cross traditional Japanese theatre known as Kabuki with a play from one of the greatest scribes to have ever lived?
The answer is Shochiku Grand Kabuki - Twelfth Night After Shakespeare, a quirky and interesting interpretation of the William Shakespeare classic which is sure to have theatre fans flocking to the Barbican in great numbers.
Yukio Ninagawa is one of the most celebrated directors on the Japanese art scene and his latest production sees him working with two of Kabuki's most lauded performers - Onoe Kikugoro VII and his son Onoe Kikunosoke V.
The play sees the classic comedy relocated to a fantastic and colourful world set in Japan's historical past.
Visitors will love the new energy that Kabuki theatre brings to Twelfth Night, with its stylised gestures, speech and music updating a truly wonderful story.
This, coupled with Ninagawa's striking stage designs, promises an exciting evening for all.
While the director dispenses with tradition in the play, somewhere which has not is the luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace.
Guests who choose the It's Showtime package can see another production the following night thanks to the two theatre tickets included in the deal.
