Event: Calitzdorp Port Wine Festival
Date: May 1st until May 3rd
Calitzdorp is the epicentre of South African port production, with wonderful examples of this special drink produced here and enjoyed in all corners of the globe.
Part of the reason its reputation is so well established is down to the Port Wine Festival, which since 1992 has attracted enthusiasts and aficionados from far and wide to South Africa to sample new flavours.
The historic village of Klein Karoo, which is located between the Swartberg, Rooiberg and Gamkaberg mountains, is already buzzing with activity for 2009.
Famous producers such as De Krans, Calitzdorp Wine Cellar, Axe Hill and Peter Bailey will treat visitors to a variety of different ports, while there will also be Portuguese red wine tasting to enjoy.
In addition, visitors can take part in grape-trampling competitions and enjoy demonstrations from renowned chef Francois Ferreira who will show how to combine wine with ostrich to make a great meal.
There is plenty for kids to do at the event as well, meaning the whole family can enjoy a few days together.
If the children are coming on the holiday then there is only one place to stay which will cater for their needs as well as those of the grownups.
That place is the luxury Cape Town hotel the 12 Apostles where families can enjoy the Kids Fun In The Sun package, which includes among other things, free in-room movies, tickets to the Aquarium, a basket of toys and a three-hour babysitting session, allowing mum and dad to spend some time alone.
