The Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London

Event: The Ceremony of the Keys
Date: Every evening

London is a city rich in history and tradition but also one which is at the forefront of the modern world.

Whether one is in search of reminders of yesteryear or the very latest forms of entertainment, the capital has more to offer than most other places.

History fans travelling from abroad will have the chance to see one of the longest surviving rituals at one of Europe's most iconic structures.

For the last 700 years, the formal locking of the gates of the Tower of London has taken place every evening.

Named the Ceremony of the Keys, it involves the chief warder turning the key at 21:53 GMT each night to keep the precious Crown Jewels safe and sound in the tower.

Once all the gates are shut, a trumpeter brings the ceremony to a close in what is a short but very important event.

For history lovers, it provides a chance to travel back in time and experience a piece of the capital's rich heritage.

To keep this exploration of tradition alive, visitors from overseas can book a stay at the luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace and take in more of the capital with the Go See London package.

It includes a continental breakfast, a sightseeing tour of the city and two tickets to the London Eye.
