Event: British Library
Date: All year round
Families wanting a day out this summer should take a trip to the British Library where kids can learn about history as well as literature.
The library, which houses thousands of books, allows the public to see relics such as Shakespeare's First Folio – a collection of the Bard's plays put together seven years after his death, and the Magna Carta.
Music fans can also view the Messiah, written in 1741 by Handel, with the British Library's display being written in the composer's own hand.
A special exhibition, which opened this week, is the Henry VIII display entitled Man and Monarch.
The exhibition celebrates 500 years since the king took to the throne and is guest-curated by Dr David Starkey.
He says the display draws on the British Library's "rich collections" and showcases the books that the king read and annotated.
Those wanting to settle in bed with a good book after exploring history can get a room at the luxury London hotel The Montague on the Gardens.
It is also offering the Calendar Girls package, including two tickets to see the new theatre show, breakfast and an afternoon tea.
