Event: Visit the Fan Museum Greenwich
Date: All year
The Fan Museum is the only establishment on earth dedicated to all aspects of the ancient art and craft of the fan, a place described as an oasis of tranquillity.
More than 3,500 antique fans call the museum home, with the world's most-important single collection of fans, fan leaves and many rare and exquisite examples which art fans are sure to love.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see the magnificent Helene Alexander collection, as well as wonderful exhibits of fans from 18th and 19th century Europe.
However, the highlight for many will be the fan painted in 1889 by Walter Richard Sickert.
The piece is painted in gouache on vellum and mounted onto grey mother of pearl monture, depicting the artiste Little Don Hetherington performing on stage at the Old Bedford Theatre.
While the museum is important for what it contains inside, the buildings themselves are significant as well, with both Grade-II listed establishments and striking examples of classic architecture.
For couples on a romantic weekend away, this could be a wonderful part of their holiday and the experience could be made even better with a stay at the luxury London hotel the Rubens at the Palace.
With the Suite Dreams package, a bottle of house champagne will be waiting in the room with chocolate-dipped strawberries to really set the romantic mood, while a two-course table d'hote meal will be served in the evening.
