Standing tall, gaunt and isolated on the dreary east coast of England is Eel Marsh House, a property which has many tragic secrets hidden behind its shuttered windows.
It is here where Mrs Alice Drablow lived and died, alone.
Arthur Kipps is a bright, young solicitor looking to make his mark as a legal eagle and is sent to the property by his company to attend the funeral and complete the paperwork on the house.
Even before reaching the funeral, Mr Kipps has a terrible sense of unease which intensifies when he notices a gaunt, pale woman stood at the back of the church, dressed in all black.
A cold feeling grips his stomach and refuses to let go, so he asks local people - who is the woman in black?
Not only do they refuse to answer his questions, they dare not speak of this lonely figure.
Gripped by intrigue, the young solicitor decides to ask her himself and learns things which change his life forever.
