Kingdom of Ife at the British Museum

Event: Kingdom of Ife - Sculptures from West Africa
Date: March 4th until June 6th

If one only paid attention to reports on television then they would think that Africa is a continent gripped by poverty and despair and not one which has given the world so much in terms of culture, politics and art.

With a rich and varied history, there is much to learn about Africa and the influence it has had across the globe.

One area where African influence is evident is art, with creative minds from Europe and beyond taking inspiration from many forms and styles born on the continent.

To celebrate the Africa's place in the world of art, the British Museum is to stage a special exhibition which will take visitors back to the 12th century AD to a place many may never have heard of.

The Kingdom of Ife was a powerful, wealthy and cosmopolitan city-state in West Africa which flourished as a political and spiritual hub and a haven for artists in search of inspiration.

Between the 12th and 15th centuries AD, many wonderful pieces of art were created, including brass, copper and stone carvings and visitors will see how the thinking of artists at the time had a major effect on some of Europe's most famous creative minds.

That is not the end of the story however, as the luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens has a special package for those keen to take in the exhibition. .

The Art and Culture at the British Museum deal provides guests with two night's accommodation in a beautifully-appointed room, a full English breakfast each day, tickets to the exhibition, a catalogue detailing everything on show and traditional afternoon tea for two.
