Event: Journey Through the Afterlife: Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead at the British Museum
Date: November 4th to March 6th 2011.
A look at life after death is what awaits those who pay a trip to the British Museum in London this autumn.
The world-renowned attraction will be running Journey Through the Afterlife: Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead from November 4th to March 6th 2011, giving attendees the chance to explore the concept of the afterlife and how it was seen by past civilisations.
Guests staying at luxury London hotel the Montague on the Gardens will be able to browse the museum's collection of Book of the Dead manuscripts, part of a large tome used for over 1,500 years between 1600 BC and 100 AD to compile spells that, it was believed, would help ensure eternal life.
Featuring what the museum describes as "beautifully-coloured illustrations", the book features images of the Netherworld and the 'weighing of the heart' ritual, which was used to decide whether a person was permitted to enter the afterlife.
Along with the book, attendees will be able to see paintings from the papyri of Hunefer and Ani, along with treasures such as jewellery, tomb figurines, amulets and gilded masks.
The Art and Culture at the British Museum package available from the Montague is an ideal way to see the exhibition, as it includes two complimentary tickets to the Museum, as well as a full English breakfast on each morning of the two-night stay and traditional afternoon tea for two.
