Despite its hifalutin reputation, Kensington High Street is not the easiest place to find a top-class bar. The Stables is small, split-level, wood-paneled and cosy, the smoking of cigars is actively encouraged, and those not in a hurry to sup up and rush off will be rewarded by the finest free bar nibbles in town, including bite sized croques monsieurs. Jockey silks in a glass display case make you feel tall.
