There's an attractive Victorian façade on this very grand late nineteenth-century former private residence, which has excellent views of Kensington Palace just opposite. It is also conveniently close to Knightsbridge's shops. All the rooms are spacious, individually decorated and graciously appointed with beautiful antique furniture. Several of the stunning split-level suites and many of the rooms have king-size four-poster beds. As a listed building, the hotel's restoration has been meticulously done according to English Heritage standards—meaning original fireplaces, carved wood panelling, high ceilings and large ornate windows. Guests also enjoy very attentive, personal service from the staff. Cheneston's Restaurant, which takes its name from an early spelling of Kensington, boasts an eclectic modern European menu. Again, the décor is all Victorian country-house-style, with plaster ceilings, flickering candle-style lights and a small private alcove off the main dining room. Start with an apéritif in the very comfortable drawing room, full of bookshelves and with a baronial-style fireplace, and you'll feel far removed from the bustle of Kensington just outside.
