Just a few months after his grueling, eight-hour emergency quadruple bypass surgery, he was on an airplane. We met in London at a swanky Red Carnation Hotel.

My brand awareness of Red Carnation Hotels was slow to take hold, maybe because where I came from "Carnation" was a brand of evaporated milk. It was a subliminal association and it took a while for me to realize that the Red Carnation Hotels brand has more in common with the elegant red flowers than with little cans of milk.
