Right in the heart of blossoming Bloomsbury this summer, tucked away in a quiet oasis in the midst of bustling London, chance upon the ‘Secret Garden’ at the Montague on the Gardens. From May 1st until September 7th, the Montague on the Gardens’ ‘Secret Garden’ will be the perfect place to wile away the balmy English summer evenings.

The ‘Secret Garden’, designed in association with prestigious floral designer and fragrance creator Kenneth Turner, will be the perfect place to take afternoon tea this summer, enjoy some Pimm’s or an evening barbecue. To compliment the tasting menu is a mini Pimm’s cocktail menu with 10 Pimm’s cocktails each with a unique twist on a favourite British summer drink. Try a refreshing Ginger Pimm’s, a punchy Southern Pimm’s Punch or a flirty Summer Passion Pimm’s.

To celebrate the numerous exciting events occurring in the capital this summer, the Best of British afternoon tea will feature a fun selection of pastries such as a Wimbledon pistachio cupcake, some Queen of tarts and Victoria sponge in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee and a nod to Ascot with a chocolate and praline top hat. The Milestone Hotel, Kensington, is celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a diamond necklace turndown

This June, London will be buzzing with Jubilee fever. While the crowds will be bringing out the bunting as Britain celebrates HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s sixty years on the throne, The Milestone Hotel will be bringing out the diamonds.

Viv James on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s adventures in Antarctica at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa – 22 March

Sir Ernest Shackleton, from County Kildare in Ireland, was an early explorer with one area of discovery on his compass: the Antarctic. In 1902, on the ship The Discovery, Shackleton and his crew became the first voyagers to travel further South than ever recorded. Shackleton continued to brave the rough, icy waters of the South Pole until he died on his final voyage in 1922.

The tales of this man will be brought to life by raconteur Viv James on 22 March at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, when he will give a presentation on his father, Reginald William James’ experiences with the legendary Sir Ernest Shackleton in Antarctica. During the presentation magnificent pictures will be shown, breathing life into the historical 1914 to 1916 mission.

The talk will commence at 7pm in the Milkwood Room, preceded by cocktail snacks in the Atlantic Terrace Marquee at 6pm.

Red Carnation Hotel Collection staff rewarded with international trip

Proving that international travel is not only for management, a butler and laundry attendant from Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat and The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa are among the enthusiastic group who will visit the United Kingdom for the annual Staff Appreciation Awards.

Five staff members from Bushmans Kloof in Cederberg - head field guide, sous chef, laundry attendant and a butler and 20 from The Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town will spend two days “working” in their positions at other luxury boutique hotels in theRed Carnation Hotel Collection’s UK portfolio. They will also have time to explore London’s hot spots and will be issued with an Oyster card providing access to London underground and complimentary use of the London Red Busses.

Bushmans Kloof Employee of the Year, Dalene Swart, is the butler at Koro Lodge, the private villa located in the reserve. She is “excited and nervous because it’s my first time overseas and my first time in an aeroplane” but says she is “more excited to see Buckingham palace”.

“Dalene takes great pride in her work and always goes the extra mile by giving 110% when looking after our guests, who love her attention to the smallest detail,” says Bushmans Kloof General Manager Graham Kennedy, who will accompany the five winners to London.

Dalene’s mother, laundry attendant Katrina, was also chosen, giving the pair a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel together overseas. It is a first trip for both.

Thabang Rapotu, guest relations manager at The Twelve Apostles, is euphoric as this is her first trip to London and it provides her the opportunity to observe the other Red Carnation properties giving her a better understanding of how they do things. “I am excited about visiting a city with so much history and hope to see another perspective of life while there. Not to mention, I eagerly anticipate witnessing the amazing fashion in London as well.”
