Welcoming 2020 with Red Carnation Hotels

From celebrating milestone anniversaries to opening new hotels, here's what we're most excited for in 2020.

Red Carnation Hotels

2019 has been a milestone year for Red Carnation Hotels. We have developed our local partnerships, helping us to empower communities and conserve endangered wildlife. At the same time, we’ve taken massive steps towards our sustainability goal: we‘ve eliminated plastic straws, takeaway cups, single-use butter trays and cocktail stirrers across our collection, and we’ve likewise swapped plastic grooming kits in our bathrooms for bamboo equivalents.

As 2020 approaches, we look forward to becoming ever more sustainable, embracing more local partnerships and adding more properties to our family-owned collection. Here’s what we have planned:

New hotels

Next year, we’ll welcome two new hotels to the Red Carnation Hotels global collection. In June, the exceptional Xigera Safari Lodge will open in the Okavango Delta – one of—if not the most—exclusive safari experiences in Africa. Set amidst the wild waterways of the Moremi Game Reserve, our camp is centred on sustainability and immerses guests in this scenic landscape.

Later in the year, our first Scottish property, 100 Princes Street, will open on Edinburgh’s most famous boulevard. Following the relocation of its previous occupants, namely the preeminent Royal Over-Seas League, Red Carnation Hotels is committed to preserving this historic clubhouse, restoring its listed features and revitalising its interiors.

The property itself lies just over Princes Street Gardens from the stoic Edinburgh Castle, enjoying sweeping views of Old Town. In the morning, gaze out as the castle’s Romantic battlements gradually appear from the easing mists. Or look east towards the majestic crest of Arthur’s Seat, standing sentinel over the stirring city.

New experiences

Alongside our expansion, we’re excited to announce unique experiences at each of our properties. In Cape Town, take to the skies in a helicopter alongside Christo Brand, warder and close friend of Nelson Mandela, and explore Robben Island while listening to his incredible tales. In Ireland, explore the lyrical landscapes of the west coast, touring its moss-green hills and granite shores while you enjoy the freshest local delicacies. Or in Durban, master unique spice-speckled recipes, such as our famous Durban Curry, with our peerless Executive Chef, Kevin Joseph. Whatever your destination, we look forward to immersing you in all it has to offer.

New partnerships

Across our collection, we’re proud to work with local charities, guides and experience-crafters, all of which help us to make travel matter and curate unique stays for our guests. In London, where we have six properties spread around the city centre, we’ve formed a new, exciting partnership with Historic Royal Palaces.

Kensington Palace

Through this collaboration, our guests will enjoy members’ access to London’s six regal residences and discounts at their resplendent shops. Each palace combines grand interiors with curated exhibitions delving into the personal lives of their most notable residents. Simply speak to any of our concierges for membership cards and start exploring.

Increased sustainability

2019 was our most sustainable year yet; we’ve no intention of slowing our pace in the new decade. In 2020, we’ll eliminate single-use toiletries across our collection, replacing miniature plastic containers with luxury refillable decanters. As we complete the transition, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the UK-based charity Clean Conscience to redistribute unused toiletries to those in need.

Similarly, we look forward to increasing our number of resident apiaries, with new hives set to be installed in The Summer Lodge Country House Hotel & Restaurant.

A year of anniversaries

This year, we celebrated our 35th anniversary. In 2020, we’ll commemorate yet another two milestones as the beloved The Montague on the Gardens’ Ski Lodge celebrates its first decade and our parent, The Travel Corporation, celebrates its centennial. As we look back, we’re thrilled with the contributions we’ve made to the travel industry and look forward to remaining at the forefront of responsible travel.
