There’s never a bad time of year to visit Dorset – after all, over half of the county is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and most of its coastline is considered a World Heritage Site. But with the seemingly never-ending stream of great events in Dorset over the next few months, summer and autumn is a particularly good time to stop by. Choose from over 35 Dorset ales and local ciders at the Beer and Bluegrass Festival in Poole, one of the most popular summer events in Dorset. Spread over two days, the festival couples great beer and food with over eighteen hours of toe-tapping music from US and UK Bluegrass bands.

The sister festival to the Isle of Wight’s world-famous Bestival, the award-winning Camp Bestival is the perfect summertime event for the entire family. This year’s programme is packed with comedy, theatre, live music (including the likes of Bob Geldof) and myriad activities, from Maypole dancing to the marvels of the Science Tent.

Not just one of the best events in Dorset, the Bournemouth Air Festival is now one of the best events in England, and has the award from VisitEngland to prove it. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers, this year’s festival includes jaw-dropping aerial displays from the Red Arrows, live music – including Proms on the Beach ­– and plenty of delicious food and drink.

Spread over 600 acres, the 47th annual Great Dorset Steam Fair is a monumental National Heritage Show and a great experience of the England of old. Learn about how people lived and worked with steam, soak up the nostalgia and enjoy the traditional atmosphere, events and activities.

Now in its 16th year, the Cheese Festival is a celebration of the 100-year history of cheese crafting in Sturminster Newton. With over 70 cheese (and other food) stalls, cheese making demonstrations, and a well-stocked ale tent, this festival in the heart of the Blackmore Vale is part-garden party, part-nirvana for cheese lovers.
