A sporting highlight of the British summer, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships is London’s most action-packed fortnight. Tennis enthusiasts travel from across the globe to spectate the prestigious Grand Slam and soak up the heady atmosphere in the capital. A stay at Hotel 41 provides easy access to the matches as well as stylish accommodation that befits the occasion. Whether spectating from Centre Court or cheering at one of the many screenings across the capital, here’s everything you need to know about the hotly anticipated 2019 Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

A historic venue

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships is hosted at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a private sports club which was founded in 1868. The first ever Championships took place here in 1877, with a Gentlemen’s Singles event. Fans of the sport and the darlings of polite society continue to flock to the momentous venue each summer, with the 2019 edition’s matches scheduled between 1st and 14th July.

First-rate tennis

This year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships promises its usual compelling line up: heavyweight international stars and celebrated athletes, high-octane singles games and epic mixed doubles heats. Serbian champion Novak Djokovic beat South African Kevin Anderson to the men’s singles title in 2018, and he triumphed in the same category of the Australian Open in January, making him a keen contender for the trophy. Meanwhile, Czech delegate Karolína Plíšková is predicted to perform strongly in the women’s singles, along with US-born Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka from Japan.

The overall prize money for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships is £38 million, of which £2.35 million is set aside for the winners of the men’s and women’s singles.

A selection of our London hotels are offering exclusive Wimbledon packages, including Centre Court Wimbledon Debenture tickets and other celebratory treats.

A jubilant atmosphere

Those without tickets can still enjoy the heady euphoria that engulfs the British capital during the Championships. A large viewing screen and banks of comfortable cushions make a welcome return to the roof garden of Cardinal Place for Wimbledon’s two-week run. Moments from Hotel 41, the retail emporium includes numerous excellent food stalls and lively bars for refreshments between matches. Choose a refreshing frozen margarita or, for a more traditional option, sip on a cold glass of Pimm’s.

Traditional refreshments

It wouldn’t be Wimbledon without a punnet of fresh strawberries poured over with cream, accompanied by a crisp glass of fizz. London’s centuries-old pubs and chicest bars typically put on a cheerful mix of Wimbledon-themed drinks and treats. Alternatively, celebrate the Wimbledon Tennis Championships from the comfort of Hotel 41’s refined Executive Lounge. Our elegant Afternoon Tea is served daily—a tantalising assortment of pretty pastries and cakes prepared by our Head Pastry Chef.
