If you could design your perfect weekend break it probably wouldn’t be a million miles away from the one that’s up for grabs at The Acorn Inn in Dorset. All you have to do is enter via their facebook page by the 14th of May 2013 and you’ll be entered in a free draw for a two night break.
How you spend the time is up to you – but here are some ideas just to get you in the mood.
Arrive in Evershot on Friday night and find the four hundred year old Acorn Inn between the bakery and just down from the ancient church. You are shown to your room, complete with traditional four poster bed, then head straight down to the bar. You can choose from Otter (brewed in Honiton), a selection of pints from the Dorset Brewing Company (from Dorchester) and a couple of brews from Yeovil Ales (from… Yeovil), as well as a selection of local guest beers.
The public bar also has a roaring log fire, ancient beams, oak panelling, ancient stone floors, photos of all the regulars, and a genuine yard of ale with a record of all those who have attempted the challenge (fastest time 10 seconds! Second fastest time is 20 seconds, by Jack, the Manager – ask him what PIA means, alongside names of those with no time listed…).
Sit down to dinner and enjoy the potted shrimps, followed by melt-in-the-mouth beer battered fish of the day with triple cooked chips, pea puree and tartare sauce, then sticky toffee pudding with hot sauce and a dollop of Dorset clotted cream.
Awake well rested and tuck into full English breakfast with hearty helpings of locally produced eggs, bacon and sausages (but there are plenty of lighter options as well!).
Pick up a bag of cherry and coconut flapjacks and chocolate chip shortbread biscuits from the bakery (in case you get peckish!) then head down to the Jurassic Coast to see Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Dor and Lyme Regis. Returning to Evershot, and having walked off those flapjacks, you pop in to The Acorn Inn’s sister property, the five star Summer Lodge Hotel. Here you tuck into their legendary afternoon tea, enjoyed in the Drawing Room designed by local architect turned novelist, Thomas Hardy.
Quick snooze in your room then down to dinner that includes twice baked Dorset cheddar cheese soufflé with walnuts, grapes, thyme butter and celery cream sauce (awesome!), seven hour braised pork belly in cider with a mixed bean and chorizo cassoulet, braised fennel and pan juices, followed by hot chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream(!).
Next day, between breakfast and a light lunch (or to work up an appetite for your Sunday Lunch – we know what really happens!), you wander up the road to explore the huge Melbury Estate deer park, then head for home – a few pounds heavier, and a lot happier!
To enter the prize draw for this brilliant weekend break simply enter on The Acorn Inn Facebook page by the 14th of May.
Prize includes two nights bed and breakfast in a Four Poster room at The Acorn Inn, with a three course dinner and bottle of house wine in the restaurant on one evening.
