Celebrating Exceptional Taste at The Oyster Box

Standing tall on the dramatic shoreline of the Indian Ocean overlooking the iconic lighthouse of Umhlanga, the statuesque Oyster Box has been a celebrated symbol of taste since it first opened in 1947. Today under the leadership of executive chef, Kevin Joseph, the hotel remains one of South Africa’s premier business and leisure destinations, renowned for its exceptional cuisine.

Supported by head chef, Luke Nair and an inspired kitchen team, Kevin brings a wealth of experience garnered from around the world - The Peninsula Hotel in Cape Town, the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Michelin-starred ‘Tamarind’ and ‘Claridges’ Restaurants in London; invaluable time was also spent at various hotels within the international Red Carnation Hotels Collection including the Breezes Resort & Spa in Bali, The Milestone Hotel and Summer Lodge in London and Red Carnation Hotel’s South African portfolio, the Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg and the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Cape Town.

The Oyster Box offers menus to suit the palate of every diner; from fine dining to simple, relaxed meals. Using the freshest seasonal ingredients, sourced from local suppliers, the cuisine at The Oyster Box offers guests the widest range of local flavours and global trends.

Using delicate blends of spices and fresh herbs, each curry is a masterpiece in itself.

The High Tea is legendary… the table laden with sumptuous treats, from freshly baked scones, pastries, quiches and cakes, to finger sandwiches and savouries, is a visual (and taste) spectacle.  Inspired by the hotels original, colonial architecture with chandeliers purchased from the Savoy Hotel in London, High Tea at The Oyster Box is a lengthy, leisurely affair. Live piano music provides the perfect backdrop and adds a personal element to the beautiful Palm Court, softening the atmosphere and putting guests at ease.  The menu changes regularly to suit seasonal availability and specialities.  All pastries and baked goods are prepared on the property by executive pastry chef, Joanita Venter and her dedicated team.

The Evening Indulgence in The Palm Court, makes for a perfect post-dinner or late afternoon treat. He is on hand to offer advice on food and wine pairings for special events, or to individual diners looking for that ‘perfect match’ to go with their food choice.
