Ashford Castle, one of Ireland’s most luxurious, five star destination hotels, has been immortalised in a new book from luxury publishing house Assouline.
Written by the award-winning author and acclaimed journalist, Stanley Stewart, and with a forward by Ireland’s former Prime Minister, Enda Kenny, the 160 page hardback book Ashford Castle tells the story of one of the Emerald Isle’s most iconic hotels.
Dating back to 1228, Ashford Castle is steeped in history and has been passed through the hands of Lords and Ladies, as well as several generations of the Guinness family, prior to opening to the public as a luxurious hotel. Over the years the Castle has been honoured with visitors ranging from King George V and Prince Rainier III of Monaco to Oscar Wilde and John Lennon, and the 350 acre Estate provided a setting for the Hollywood production of The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne.
In 2013, Ashford Castle was acquired by The Red Carnation Hotel Collection which embarked on an extensive restoration and enhancement programme. This book lovingly presents what Ashford looks like today, detailing the history and the characters whose lives are woven into the fabric of the Castle. Stewart’s thoughtfully written narrative gives a flavour of the grandeur of Ashford Castle’s 82 guest rooms, and its latest addition, the new and secluded Hideaway Cottage. Beautiful photography also showcases the stunning estate and its gardens, which were originally designed by Lady Ardilaun when the Castle was the Guinness family’s seat. The activities on offer including Ireland’s first falconry school and only Orvis-endorsed fishing, golf, horse-riding, kayaking, zip-lining, cycling, tennis and clay shooting are also brought to life. As part of the hotel’s loving refurbishment, which utilised Irish artisans and materials sourced from the local area, the hotel now offers a spa, cinema, billiards room, wine cellars and plenty of thoughtful touches throughout.
Voted Virtuoso’s ‘Best Hotel in the World’, inducted into the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Ashford Castle is a world-class luxury hotel and a jewel in Ireland’s crown, delivering warm hospitality and unparalleled service. The luxurious hardback book, Ashford Castle is a celebration of Ireland’s history of castles and legends.
